The House is a building which you build to provide shelter to your people. You are allowed to build a House only with-in your city walls. Building a House allows your city’s population to grow, allowing more people to make your city their home. At level 1, a cottage will increase you city’s population by 100, and increase it accordingly each time you upgrade.
Also note to build a cottage you need resources, which you will pay when you construct one. You need a certain number of Houses in each of your cities, usually about 6+ once you’ve got all your barracks leveled up.
Houses supports population of a city. Population is used for two main things: Workers and Troops for your army.
In any city, you need people to work in your farms, sawmills, quarries, and iron mines. Therefore, with each resource building that you build, you a certain portion of your population goes to work. The remaining population is used to train, or recruit, troops. If you have 5,000 idle population it means you have the ability to create 5,000 men. Of course, since troops such as archers take “2 population” you can only train 2,500 archers.
Tax and PopulationEdit
Tax rate affects population as well. For example, if you have 1000 idle population and your Tax Rate is 0%. If you adjust your Tax Rate to 10%, you will only have 900 Idle population[1000*(1-10%)].
